Flatbed Scanners – Your FAQs answered

1. What is a flatbed scanner best used for?

Flatbed scanners are ideal for digitising documents, photographs, artwork, certificates and other items that need to remain flat during scanning. They are especially useful for delicate or irregular originals that should not be fed through an automatic document feeder

2. Can flatbed scanners scan photographs?

Yes. Flatbed scanners are a popular choice for photo scanning because they can capture fine detail and accurate colour. Some models also include image enhancement tools to help improve older or faded photographs.

3. Can a flatbed scanner scan film, slides and negatives?

Some flatbed scanners include a Transparency Media Adapter (TMA) for digitising 35mm slides, film strips and negatives. If film scanning is important, check that the model specifically supports transparency media.

4. Can book scanners turn scanned books into searchable PDFs?

Yes. Book scanners with OCR software can recognise printed text and convert scans into searchable PDF files, making it much easier to find words and information within digitised documents

5. What is the difference between CIS and CCD scanners?

CIS scanners are compact and ideal for everyday scanning, while CCD scanners offer greater depth of field and are better suited to photos, artwork and originals that may not sit completely flat.

6. Do Epson still make the Expression range of flatbed scanners?

No. Epson no longer makes CCD-based flatbed scanners. We recommend Microtek as an excellent alternative, with a range of CCD scanners designed for high-quality photo, artwork and document scanning.
